Varkey GEMS Foundation

Pupils and staff have recently had the opportunity to hear about how the Varkey GEMS Foundation is making a difference to the lives of underprivileged children in Kenya.

Mr Raminder Vig (Director of Schools for GEMS UK) spoke to pupils from Year 6 to Year 11 looking at what we tend to take for granted on a daily basis.

He then showed a video (see below) of a school in Kibera, an impoverished area of Kenya, and talked about the day to day hardships faced by the children who live there.

Mr Vig spoke about the work that the Varkey GEMS Foundation is doing to help these children to have access to an education that could give them an opportunity to escape from and improve the situation that they have grown up in.

The discussion that followed broached questions such as ‘How do we feel about other children living in these conditions?’, ‘How do the children in Kibera deal with their situation?‘, ‘Do we appreciate what we take for granted?’ and ‘What could we do to help?’

Maybe these are questions that we should all consider?
