JPS - The Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Al Nahyan Awards

The Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Al Nahyan Award is awarded to girl students from GEMS schools all over the world for their outstanding academic performance, leadership skills and their significant contribution to social and  environmental and impressive general conduct. This year, the main award function was held in the Dubai Modern High School. Katrina Webb was selected for Sheikha Fatima Award 2012 and Polly Jones for Sheika Fatima Award 2011. 

GEMS Founder and Chairman Sunny Varkey congratulated the students, parents and teachers, and said that the winners have made an indelible impression with their positive and distinctive contributions. The award winners from the UAE will receive a scholarship to cover a year's tuition fee at their respective school.

Ms. Webb says:

"Hello. My name is Katrina Webb, 10 years old;  I am the lucky recipient of the prestigious Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Award for Academic Excellence this year. Words cannot describe how honoured I am to have received this award. To be recognized for my work at school and won a year’s scholarship at my last year are a great honour and privilege. 
 
I am still amazed at how I was chosen for this award.  I believe that teachers look at behavior at school and efforts in all subjects. The winner is nominated by her teachers to the Principal of school who then put the name forward to GEM head office. To be nominated for this outstanding award, the teachers, no matter where, take into consideration how that student communicates in school and what they do out of school that contributes to GEM’s core values.
 
Personally, school is fun for me, no matter what subject. I always enjoy what I am doing and love to learn from my mistakes, so I can do better next time. I love everything that JPS teaches, everything is new to me and I am open to ideas. However, not only are academic studies important to me, all the extra-curricular activities outside of the classroom are equally exciting.
 
Every Tuesday and Saturday, I attend a dance class called DIVERSE which is an amazing performing arts club --  always pushing you to the limits and making you challenge yourself. Also, I go to sport clubs such as DC netball, which is a fantastic netball club gives you new targets to work towards. Athletics Kings, a tennis club I attend regularly,  helps me with my tennis technique and certain aspects of my match play. Lastly, T.C athletics, my athletic club, do drills and time trials regularly, trying to make you go out of your comfort zone.
 
Shall I always remember this phenomenal moment that changes my life? Yes, I shall. This award made me feel much more confident inside and now I am willing to get out of my comfort zone and take on new challenges. This moment of my life will stay deep in my heart and my family will always feel proud of me. In previous years, I always noticed other winners’ picture in reception; I was secretly hoping that I would be like them someday. Now I am, and I wish the next recipient greatest of luck and hope she will choose to do the right things all the time.
 
I will always remember this amazing award that marks a big change in my life.
