Admission Overview
International School Benghazi is dedicated to serving the international community in Benghazi, as well as others seeking an education based on the National Curriculum for England. Applications for admission are reviewed and decided upon by the Principal, at times, in conjunction with the School Board. The Principal will make initial year placement decisions.
Children accepted to International School Benghazi are expected to show:
-
The ability to function in an English Language Learning environment.
-
The appropriate level of educational aptitude and skills required at each year level.
Enrolment Procedure:
-
Parents should complete the registration form. This is available from the school.
-
An interview is arranged with the Principal. Any records, references, test results, or medical records should be brought along for this interview.
-
A subsequent English Test is organised. If necessary a Visit Day may be organised in order to make clearer the child’s suitability for attending International School Benghazi. Students will only begin in class at the beginning of a week, on a Sunday.
-
In almost all cases, a child will be placed in the relevant year class (dependent on their age as at 1st September of the year). However, if requested, or deemed necessary by the Principal, class teacher and/or parents, a child may be accepted into the class one year below or one year above their age. In this situation, there are expectations that previous school records will be available, as well as evidence of previous tests undertaken, and references from previous schools.
-
Any offers of a place will be made in writing. Any decisions made by the Principal are final. If a place is not offered, advice and further information will be supplied to the child’s parents. If a place is offered, subsequent forms are filled in and additional information given - such as ‘School Uniform’ stationary and text book requirements.
-
Registration and other fees are payable on entry to the school. A child may leave the school for up to 3 months and a place will be held open for them, as long as tuition fees are paid for the period of absence. During the absence, the child is expected to attend an appropriate school, with documentation of such attendance required upon return to the International School Benghazi. Parents are requested to inform the school at least 30 days before the end of the period of leave, of their intent to take up the place left open for the child in writing, in order for the school to be able to confirm a place for the child. Any period of longer than 3 months will be up to the discretion of the School Board.
-
International School Benghazi will accept children with Learning Needs if we feel that we can support and provide a meaningful education for them. Admission for students with Learning Needs is on a case-by-case basis, with the Principal’s decision being final. The costs of any additional support required for students with Learning Needs will be the responsibility of the student’s parents.
Enrolment Priority
The school will aim to admit children in each school year up to, but not exceeding the school's standard number of 22 per class for all children. If the number of requests exceeds the number of places available, the following criteria apply in order of priority:
-
Children with siblings already in the school.
-
Children of qualified teaching staff currently in employment at International School Benghazi.
-
Libyan returnees (a returnee is defined as a child who has completed at least two years of western style education overseas).
-
Children of Libyan parents who can demonstrate a compelling need for a western education, as well as the required aptitude in English language.
-
At the International School Benghazi we firmly believe that there should be no discrimination based on gender, culture, nationality and religion, or in any other area.
Role of Parents
International School Benghazi expects parents to:
1. Pay tuition fees promptly in accordance with the Tuition Fee Policy.
2. Take an active role in the life of the school.
3. Be able to communicate with the teachers and staff in English.
4. Be willing to work with the child at home (i.e. encourage reading, help with homework).
Parents who are considering sending their child to this school may visit, by making an appointment to see the Principal.
Additional Information
Most children are admitted in September, but if vacancies exist the school will normally admit children throughout the course of the year.
Entrance Assessments
-
Families are welcome to apply to International School Benghazi, regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion.
-
There are limited spaces for children with additional learning needs but we do not have provision for children with severe or complex educational needs.
-
Wherever possible we aim to interview every International School Benghazi child and their parents prior to entry.
-
Students in Year 2 through 6 are required to sit an entrance assessment in English. Examination assessments in both English and Mathematics apply to students entering Year 7 onwards.
-
If a student makes an application from a city other than Benghazi, an offer may be made on production of a school report. In these cases, the report must be excellent in both the academic and the behavioural areas.
